Derek and Nick Neville Prepare for Busy Oktoberfest Week-end

ASA Mid West Tour Oktoberfest Winner could win a potential $10,000!!!

BURLINGTON, WI (Wednesday, September 17, 2008) – The final event of the 2008 season for the American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment at the Oktoberfest Race Weekend will present something new and exciting for the fans and competitors. Oktoberfest Promoter John McKarns, in agreement with ASAMT officials, are announcing a progressive format for the Championship Weekend.

“Ever since SpeedWeeks, I have been studying how the World of Outlaws and World Dirt conduct their races,” McKarns stated. “And then we added a few twists for the Sunday portion of the program to guarantee great Super Late Model racing for our fans both days!”

Fans will see this format during Fest’s Super Saturday on Oktober 4th and Championship Sunday on Oktober 5th.

On Super Saturday, the ASAMT will qualify at 2 pm. This will set the field for two 25-lap qualifying features, odd and even. Within each group, the top nine cars will be inverted. The top-ten finishers in each heat will advance to the 100-lap main event on Sunday and will start in their finishing position. For example, the fifth place odd finisher will start on the inside of the fifth row on Sunday; the fifth place even finisher will start on the outside of the fifth row.

Then on Championship Sunday, the top-three from each of the 25-lap heats on Saturday will compete in the “Six-for-Six Dash.”

The winner of the Dash will then have to make a choice of either starting on the pole for the 100-lap main event that will pay $5,000 to win or, in the spirit of the old ARTGO “Ultimate Challenge,” decide to start 30th and pass everyone to collect an additional $5,000 bonus on top of the $5,000 to win to make it a $10,000 pay day. If the Dash winner does not accept the “Challenge,” the runner-up will be offered the opportunity.

And there will be one more thing to be added to the main event. McKarns is also adding a “Shoot Out” caution on lap 75 to bunch up the cars. Meaning that if a driver took the challenge has worked his way up to second by lap 75, that driver will be right on the leader’s back bumper at the start of lap 76.

The format listed above is based on 50 cars. If more than 60 cars qualify, there will be three 25-lap qualifying events on Saturday night with six inverted and seven advancing with the top-two advancing in the “Six-For-Six Dash.” Last year, 68 cars competed in the ASAMT event.

The balance of the 30-car field for Sunday will be based on qualifying times, finishes in Sunday’s last chance events and by points. Racing on Sunday will begin at Noon.

McKarns also noted that in the three years that ARTGO featured the “Ultimate Challenge” at its event, it was won five times. Those winners include: Butch Miller, Joe Shear, Tony Strupp, Steve Carlson and Tom Carlson.

Miller’s win at Toledo in 1992 was the biggest as he collected $11,690 after taking the lead 78 laps into that event. A week later, Tom Carlson accepted the Challenge at Oktoberfest and was the winner after taking the lead on lap 62.

Carlson’s last to first win at Fest was one of three to have taken place at the historic event. In 1971, Dick Trickle started 31st in a 33-car field and was the winner, lapping all but two other cars after 200 laps. And in 2002, Brian Hoppe, due to a NASCAR penalty, started last and won. All of these won without the benefit of a “Shoot-Out” caution.

“Tim (Olson, ASAMT President) and I are excited to have our ASAMT Championship decided at Oktoberfest,” Steve Einhaus, ASAMT VP stated. “We are always looking at ways to improve our racing program for the fans and when John presented this idea to us, we thought it would be a good opportunity to test it before our 2009 season.”

In addition to competing in the ASAMWT events, the Brothers Neville have entered the "Futures 25" race set for Thursday night Oct 2nd and will race in the "Dick Trickle99" on Friday night Oct 3rd
