Awards banquet puts "exclamation point" on successful 2006 season!
Louisville, Ky was the setting as the Buzz Motorsports team celebrated their 2006 ASA LMS accomplishments in style with the season ending awards banquet January 20. The top 15 drivers from each of the three ASA LMS divisions were honored at the semi-formal affair, held in the ballroom of the Clarion Hotel. The weekend actually got started Friday night before the banquet with the annual "ASA LMS Meet & Greet" where teams were invited to sit down, relax and just talk racing. Officials, media and racers spent this informal session discussing the past, present and future of the series. Saturdays activities began with the "2007 Rules Meeting". During this 4 hour meeting, conducted by ASA LMS president Ron Varney, all aspects of the 2007 season were discussed including rule changes, tech procedures, safety requirements and payouts. Races also got to hear from guest speakers, including NASCAR star Randy Lajoie, head of The Joie of Seating and Bill Martens, president of GM Performance Parts.
Matt Prieur, ASA LMS Master of Ceremonies kicked off the evenings festivities at 6pm in the beautifully decorated Grand Ballroom. Many awards were given out and many drivers and dignitaries took their turn at the microphone, but the highlight of the evening was when the "Brothers Neville" took the stage and received their awards for their outstanding rookie season. Nick was the first of the brothers to stand at the podium where he delivered a brief yet memorable speech, thanking those who helped and congratulating his competitors, including his brother Derek on their accomplishments. A few minutes later, the crowd got to hear from the 2006 ASA LMS North Division Rookie of the Year. Derek spent a few minutes discussing the 2006 season and shared the story of the "rivalry" he has with his brother Nick and who has the racing supremacy in the Neville household. He ended his speech by inviting Nick up the stage where Derek jokingly presented him with his "Rookie Runner-up" award, a 2 inch tall trophy, much to the delight of the crowd! The evening, as well as the 2006 season, concluded with a catered dinner followed by music and dancing 'til midnight!
The following is a brief recap of the Buzz Motorsports 2006 season accomplishments:
2006 ASA LMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year; Derek Neville
5th place in overall point standings
The 2006 ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year originally hadn’t planned on running the full 2006 schedule until halfway through the season. When he realized that he and his younger brother, Nick Neville were 1-2 in the chase for the ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year title, he decided to pursue the chase for the freshman crown and he made it count!
During the 2006 season, Derek's' best effort was a runner-up showing at the Lorain (OH) Speedway on June 24, 2006 in the ASALMS Northern Division. The second place showing is Derek’s lone Top Five to go with five Top 10 showings, which was enough to win the 2006 Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year title in the ASALMS Northern Division by 14 points ahead of his younger brother, Nick Neville. He also finished fifth in the ASALMS Northern Division Overall Points chase. Neville also made select appearances in the ASALMS Southern Division and finished 10th in his first ever pavement start during the Pepsi 100 Presented by Ryan's Steakhouse at the Beech Bend (KY) Raceway Park on April 29, 2006.
2006 ASALMS Northern Division Rookie Runner-up; Nick Neville
6th Place in overall point standings
The 2006 season saw Nick finish with one Top Five, a season high fifth place effort at the Lake Erie (PA) Speedway back on June 9, 2006 to go with four Top 10 finishes during the complete 2006 ASALMS Northern Division schedule. He finished behind his brother in the runner-up spot for the coveted Freshman title. Nick finished just 14 points behind his brother and in sixth place overall as well.
In addition, Neville also made select appearances in the ASALMS Southern Division and finished seventh in his first ever pavement start at the Beech Bend (KY) Raceway Park on April 29, 2006. He backed that up two months later by winning the Fast Qualifier award and finishing sixth at the Rockcastle (KY) Speedway on June 17, 2006. Nick also finished a strong eighth during the ASALMS portion of the 24th annual All-American 400 Weekend at the Music City (TN) Motorplex.
