The 2006 is winding down for the “Brothers Neville”. Music City is in the rear view mirror with the 2007 season on the horizon.
By: Buzz Motorsports/M.P.H. Promotions Mackinaw, Illinois (11/22/2006): 2006 ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Rookie of the Year, Derek Neville and his younger brother, Nick Neville are wrapping up their respective 2006 seasons, their first in the ASALMS Presented by GM Performance Parts with an eye towards the upcoming 2007 season, the ASALMS fifth anniversary season.
For the 2007 season, Derek will be driving for new car owners in his sophomore season; His Parents, Jamie and Beverly Neville, the current owners of the #55 entry driven by Nick, have purchased a second car that Derek will pilot on a full time basis in 2007.
"Having both of the boys driving family owned cars will allow all the decisions to be made "in house" and will be a big step forward for the entire Buzz Motorsports Team." Stated team owner Jamie Neville.
"We want to extend a big Thank You to Car owners Brian and Jet Zeigler who provided Derek the opportunity in 2006 to pursue and win the ASALMS Northern Division Rookie Of the Year title." The elder Neville added.
The 2007 season will see the “Brothers Neville” run full slate of events within the crown jewel of the ASALMS, the Challenge Division as well as possibly the full schedule in the ASALMS Northern Division. In addition, plans also call for the Neville Brothers to race some shows in the ASALMS Southern Division as well as in their UMP Modifieds locally on ASALMS off weekends.
In their last event, the ASALMS portion of the 24th annual All-American 400 weekend, both Neville Brothers qualified into the show out of a stellar 61 car field and both had high hopes entering the 200-lap Feature in a non-points event for the ASALMS down at the Music City (TN) Motorplex in Nashville, Tennessee over the weekend of November 3-5, 2006.
18-year-old Nick Neville faired the best of the “Brothers Neville” as the younger Neville posted a strong eighth place finish while 20-year-old Derek Neville suffered extensive damage after contact with another car and then the turn one wall and dropped out with a 20th place finish.
"What a fun weekend in Nashville without the pressure of the points battle!" Stated Nick. "A top 10 finish in one of the biggest short track races in the country was a great way to end our rookie season." He added.
"After having a lackluster race at Lacrosse, we sent our car out to Tunks Motorsports where they made some pretty radical changes to our Lefthander chassis.” Explained Nick. “The improvement was amazing! At the track, we worked hard on our qualifying set-up and to time in the top 20 was our only sure way to lock into the race.” He continued.
Nick qualified eighth fastest out of 61 cars and just missed the inversion, which was a seven, so Nick started the 200-lap Feature from the outside of the fourth row right next to ARP Bodies Fast Qualifier and eventual Feature winner, Eddie Hoffman. “Our team has come a long way since the beginning of the season." Nick added.
"Just making the field for the Nashville race put an exclamation point on our great season! Added Derek Neville, the 2006 ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year. "Crew Chief Kevin Tunks had a great set-up right out of the trailer. We were able to hang around the top 20 on the speed charts throughout most rounds of practice.” Derek explained.
“I wasn't about to let my team down when it came time to step up to the plate to qualify." Derek continued. The elder Neville Brother qualified 20th out of 61 cars and would start the 200-lap Feature from the outside of the 10th row.
"After starting the race 20th, we finally moved up into the top 10 and right behind Nick at about lap 175 when I got together with another car and my day ended early against the turn one wall." Stated Derek. “Nevertheless it was a great weekend no matter what.” He added.
During the 2006 season, Derek Neville’s best effort was a runner-up showing at the Lorain (OH) Speedway on June 24, 2006 in the ASALMS Northern Division. The second place showing is Derek’s lone Top Five to go with five Top 10 showings which was enough to win the 2006 Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year title in the ASALMS Northern Division.
As for Nick Neville, overall between the ASALMS Northern Division and the Nashville event, he finished with one Top Five finish, a season high fifth place effort at the Lake Erie (PA) Speedway back on June 9, 2006 to go with five Top 10 finishes during the complete 2006 ASALMS Northern Division schedule and finished behind his brother in the runner-up spot for the coveted Freshman title.
In the Overall points chase in the ASALMS Northern Division, The Neville Brothers finished fifth and sixth respectively with Derek finishing only 14 points ahead of Nick in both the overall and rookie title chases (1644-1630). Derek also finished only 57 points behind fourth place finisher, Peter Cozzolino in the final ASALMS North points tallies.
The Neville Brothers also competed in select ASALMS Southern Division events during the 2006 season with both carrying season high seventh place finishes. Derek’s was during the North VS South World Cup 200 at the I-70 (MO) Speedway back on September 24, 2006.
During the 2006 season, both Neville Brothers ran Lefthander Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlos as Derek carried sponsorship on the side of his machine from Ben E. Neville Roll-Off and Trucking Services as well as Hutton Motorsports, Zeigler Enterprises, M.P.H. Promotions, and Buzz Motorsports.
Nick carried sponsorship from; Hutton Car Care, as well as Ben E. Neville Roll-Off and Trucking Services, Nick’s Quality Lawn Care, Signs of Success, Zeigler Enterprises, M.P.H. Promotions, and Buzz Motorsports.
