Derek Neville leads younger brother Nick Neville in the chase for the Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year title heading to Michigan this weekend!
By Buzz Motorsports/M.P.H. PromotionsMackinaw, Illinois (08/17/2006): The racing Neville Brothers, Derek and Nick Neville continue to hold a fierce sibling rivalry in the chase for the Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year title in the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts.
The next two events on the ASALMS Northern Division schedule is also one of the biggest weekends of the season for the entire ASALMS. The 2nd annual Michigan Doubles Weekend Presented by the Michigan Racing Scene is this weekend on Friday and Saturday August 18-19, 2006.
The ASALMS Northern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts will spend the weekend in the ASALMS home state of Michigan for a weekend double header as the Kalamazoo (MI) Speedway, will host Day One on Friday August 18, 2006 for the Lane Automotive 100 Presented by Tough Coat Powder Coatings.
The next night, Saturday August 19, 2006, the cars and stars of the ASALMS Northern Division at the famed Berlin (MI) Raceway, located West of Grand Rapids, in Marne, Michigan on Saturday August 19, 2006 for the running of the U.A.W./United Auto Workers 100.
This past weekend was an off weekend for the ASALMS Northern Division, but that didn’t stop Nick Neville from competing as the Mackinaw, Illinois freshman invaded the M.I.S.S. (Midwest Independent Super Late Model Series) Super Pro Series event at the Angola (IN) Motor Speedway on Saturday August 12, 2006 for the Pulver Asphalt and Paving 75 Presented by Bollhoff Rivnut and Lipari Foods.
“This race wasn’t on our schedule, but at the last minute we decided to head over to Angola and our plan was to use the race as a 75 lap test session.” Explained Neville. “But when the green flag dropped, the car just wanted to head to the front!” Laughed the 18-year-old Prairie State driver as he talked about running in the Super Pro Series.Besides Nick, Car Owner, Brian Zeigler jumped behind the wheel of Nick’s older brother, Derek’s #95 Hutton Motorsports machine for the Angola event while Derek switched roles and served as Crew Chief for his car owner!
The Super Pro Series, based in Rives Junction, Michigan, is similar to the ASALMS and utilizes the same Template Body/Crate Engine package that has caught on all over the United States in recent seasons and was made popular by the ASALMS.
As for Nick at Angola, a great battle ensued with Angola favorite, Jack Landis as the duo battled for several laps with Neville even passing Landis for the lead with seven laps to go. Unfortunately, a caution came out and in the Super Pro Series, they revert back to the last completed lap, putting Neville back behind Landis.
On the restart, Neville again pulled up along-side the 2004 Super Pro Series Champion, but Landis held off the 18-year-old at the striped to win the 75-lap Feature for the Super Pro Series. Neville settled for second.
“I am very pleased with a second place finish, but it would have been real interesting to have had just a few more laps!” Continued Neville. “I had gotten around Jack once on lap 68 when a yellow flag forced me back behind him.” He added.
Neville added. “Then on the white flag lap I pulled along side him again only to be blocked by a lapped car on the inside coming off four for the checkered.” Neville stated. “To be that close to a win this early in my career is like a dream come true!” Remarked the Mackinaw, Illinois rookie.
As for the upcoming 2nd annual Michigan Doubles Weekend Presented by the Michigan Racing Scene, the “Brothers Neville” are eager to resume there battle for the coveted Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year title.
“Two races in two days would be tough on any team, especially a new team with two rookie drivers.” The younger brother continued. “Kalamazoo looks to be a lot of fun, and I think the track is going to be totally different with 25 other cars out there!” Nick stated.
“Us rookies are going to have our work cut out for us at Kalamazoo.” Added older brother, Derek Neville. “There is not much room for error there. It’ll be important to keep the fenders on the car Friday night so we have something left to race on Saturday at Berlin!” The 20-year-old Neville brother added.
Derek’s 2006 season so far has him leading the Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year title chase over younger brother Nick by 10 points. Derek’s best effort so far has been a runner-up showing at the Lorain (OH) Speedway on June 24, 2006. The second place showing is Derek’s lone Top Five to go with three Top 10 showings.
As for younger brother, Nick, he also has one Top Five finish, a season high fifth place effort at the Lake Erie (PA) Speedway back on June 9, 2006 to go with three Top 10s.
As for the Overall points chase in the ASALMS Northern Division, The Neville Brothers are fifth and sixth respectively with Derek only 26 points back of veteran, Peter Cozzolino.
Both Neville Brothers will run identically prepared Lefthander Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlos as Derek carries sponsorship on the side of his machine from Hutton Motorsports as well as Zeigler Enterprises, Buzz Motorsports, and M.P.H. Promotions.
