The “Brothers Neville” remain first and second in the Appleton Rack and Pinion Rookie of the Year points heading to Columbus 151 (WI) Speedway.
By Buzz Motorsports/M.P.H. PromotionsMackinaw, Illinois (08/01/2006): Anytime a driver gets a chance to run the historic O’Reilly (IN) Raceway Park at Indianapolis, (Formally Indianapolis Raceway Park) for many drivers it’s a chance of a lifetime just to be able to make laps around the famed 0.686 mile progressively banked paved oval.
To make any show at the Clermont, Indiana speed plant is a chore in itself. It’s not uncommon for traveling series’ of all types to boast above average car counts forcing some teams to not be able to make the shows!
For Mackinaw, Illinois based brothers, Nick and Derek Neville, the first task was accomplished as both made the show and started the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division’s seventh race of the 2006 season; The A.S.I. Limited 100 Presented by Lucas Oil Products and TMC Transportation.
With the invasion of some of the top teams of the crown jewel of the ASALMS, the televised Challenge Division also making their way to Indianapolis. The field was going to be tough to make to say the least. But loyalty does have its’ rewards.
Although both Neville Brothers didn’t qualify in the Top 20 out of the strong 41 teams on hand, both brothers would get into the 100-lap feature based on the 2006 ASALMS Northern Division Owners Points Standings and would start 22nd and 23rd respectively.
“ORP is a great track to race on. Lot’s of room to run side by side.” Explained Nick as he talked about his first experience at the O”Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. “I had a great time racing with the 81 car. He was on my quarter panel for at least 30 laps!” He added.
After a lengthy dual with the second place driver in ASALMS Northern Division Points, the 18-year-old finally let the 16-year-old Smith go. “As the laps went by, my car kept getting tighter and Jesse kept getting further under me.”“Finally with about 10 laps to go I had to give up the spot to him. Good clean, old-fashioned racing, that’s what I love.” Nick stated. Neville would be shown 13th at the end of the event.
“I love the speed on the bigger race tracks like ORP and I-70.” He continued. “I’m hoping to get to run the Challenge Division race at Milwaukee later in the season but until then I am excited about racing at the little bullring in Columbus this weekend” Nick stated.
As for his older brother, Derek Neville; “What an up and down day at ORP!” Exclaimed Derek as he reflected on his first appearance at the track formally known as the Indianapolis Raceway Park. “We’ve been struggling a little on the flatter, big tracks and had a hard time getting dialed in during the early practice sessions.” He explained.
“Later in practice the car started getting nice and comfortable. After qualifying mid-pack, I felt pretty good about my chances in the 100 lapper.” He continued. “Bad luck found me during the first lap of the race. Someone up in front of me didn’t get going on the green flag and the chain reaction made it all the way back to my front bumper and nose.” He continued.
The damage wasn’t as bad as first thought and Derek was able to continue with a slightly damaged race car. “This is when I learned a good lesson in aerodynamics.” Laughed Derek. “After this contact, the car was almost impossible to drive because of the damaged bodywork.”
“My crew was finally able to make repairs during a caution around lap 40 and it felt like I had a whole new car again but by then it was too late to be a factor, so we just tried and finished.” He remarked. Derek would come home a disappointing 17th place, four laps off the pace.
The next event for the Neville Brothers will see the Mackinaw, Illinois siblings head North to the Columbus 151 (WI) Speedway on Saturday August 5, 2006 for the ASALMS Northern Division’s eighth race of the 2006 season; the Wisconsin 151 Presented by Sign 1-1.
It will be the first ever appearance for both Neville’s at the 1/4 mile semi-banked paved oval located Northeast of Wisconsin’s capital city of Madison, in Columbus, Wisconsin.
“Recently our team has been doing some testing and trying some ‘experimental’ set-ups that my crew chief, Bobby Hutton has came up with.” Continued Nick. “I really think we are on to something and I can’t wait to try it out in competition.” The 18-year-old ended.
“I’m working hard to stay in this rookie battle.” Added Derek “I need good run in the Columbus 151 race this weekend to keep the pressure on Nick!” He ended.
So far in 2006, Nick has one Top Five finish, a season high fifth place effort at the Lake Erie (PA) Speedway back on June 9, 2006 to go with three Top 10s, while Derek’s best effort so far has been a runner-up showing at the Lorain (OH) Speedway on June 24, 2006. The second place showing is Derek’s lone Top Five to go with two Top 10 showings.
As for the season long points chase in the ASALMS Northern Division, The Neville Brothers are 1-2 in the Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year title chase and are separated by 20 points with Nick leading older brother, Derek. In addition, they also sit fifth and sixth in the overall ASALMS Northern Division title chase!
